Dream Until Your Dreams Come True…

When I bought this decal for my daughter’s room, I wanted it to inspire her to reach for the stars.  To dream so big and never allow herself to give up.  I figured, if she looked at it long enough, then the idea would somehow burrow into her little mind.  The truth is that it has probably had more of an impact on me than her, since she is only 4 and still learning to read. I, on the other hand, can read good well (at least most of the time). So every time I look at it, I’m reminded to do just that.  Though I must admit, the hard part has been actually putting it into action. Why is it that such a simple quote is so much easier said than done?  Why is it, the older we get, the harder it is to dream?

As a child, I had no trouble dreaming of the impossible. For instance, becoming the real life Rainbow Brite, or the newest addition to Jem and the Holograms, both felt well within my reach. These days, things don’t seem as attainable, especially since I’ve somehow trained myself to discard even the simplest desires, all because of fear.  Fear, the word that has paralyzed me and so many others, from accomplishing our dreams. Sometimes I wonder when and why I allowed it to take over? Though, I’m sure I can come up with a hundred excuses reasons, I know I shouldn’t let it control me. And most importantly, I shouldn’t allow it to dictate my decisions. To quote the famous visionary, Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” A powerful thought, but how do we achieve it? How do we get the courage we need?

A couple of weeks ago, I came across an article about Walt Disney, and how he got started. If you’re not familiar with his story, you really need to check it out. It’s quite inspiring. (Select link to read more) Like most people he faced several challenges, including bankruptcy and losing the rights to his invented character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. I can only imagine these challenges brought upon fears and discouragement since he was forced to start over. The difference however, is that he did NOT allow those failures to stop him.  In fact, he continued to persevere, to pursue his vision. And we all know how that story ended. Even decades after his death, we still see the fruit of his labor.

So…why not let yourself dream big? Let yourself push past those fears. Do not allow setbacks to cloud your vision and stop you from accomplishing your goals. Below are some more inspirational quotes to get you started:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 34:4

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.” Colin Powell

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”  Harriet Tubman
